Ilene Susan Fort

Ilene Susan Fort is an esteemed art historian and curator, and now Curator Emerita of American Art Department at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), where she served as a curator for over three decades. She holds a PhD in Art History from the City University of New York (CUNY) Graduate Center and diplomas from Columbia University and Temple University. She is an authority on Frederick A. Bridgman, Childe Hassam, Thomas Eakins, Stanton MacDonald-Wright, and Helen Lundeberg. Her scholarship has focused extensively on American expatriates, Orientalism, modernism, Surrealism, and women and California artists. She has organized numerous major exhibitions, including the landmark In Wonderland: The Surrealist Adventures of Women Artists in Mexico and the United States.

A longtime advocate for expanding the historical record, Fort has written and lectured extensively on overlooked women artists and the development of modern art in Southern California. She brings this depth of curatorial expertise and scholarly knowledge to the Almost Forgotten Women Artists as Curatorial Advisor.
